Decide Dekalb Pre-Apprenticeship Opportunity for Seniors

    
Industry Ready DeKalb Pre-Apprenticeship

 DeKalb County School District High School Seniors are encouraged to apply for the Industry Ready DeKalb Pre-Apprenticeship. Scholarships are paid for by local manufacturers.  
 
The Pre-Apprenticeship is a structured training that:
 
  • Prepares students for employment in rewarding careers after High School
  • Is an entry point for Registered Apprenticeships with local manufacturers
  • Grants individuals free training so they’re ready to enter the workforce without incurred college debt.
Curriculum
 
The goal of the pre-apprenticeship is to provide a training and engagement experience that qualifies the trainee for entry level employment in one of the roles associated with the targeted pathways.
 
The Pre-Apprenticeship program will allow participants to focus on of two high-demand career pathways:
 
  • Machine Operator pathway (7-8 weeks)
  • Industrial Maintenance pathway (11-12 weeks)
 
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2022 Machine Operators in the US had a median pay of between $18.58 and $25.41 per hour in 2022 and Industrial Maintenance Technicians had a median pay of $28.59 per hour in 2022.
 
Both careers require only a High School diploma, but experience is usually needed to secure employment.

Machine Operator Pathway
  • Introduction to Manufacturing  
  • Fundamentals of Industry 4.0
  • Navigate HMI screens
  • Introduction to common machine faults  
  • Communicating faults or issues to maintenance  
  • Forklift Class
  • OSHA 10 for General Industry
  • Direct Industry Exposure
Maintenance Technician Pathway
  • Fundamentals of Mechanical Systems  
  • Industrial Safety
  • Introduction to Mechanical Systems
  • Reading Blueprints and Technical Diagrams
  • Schematics and Symbols
  • Applied Mathematics and Measurements  
  • Maintenance Tools and Materials
  • Power Transmission Systems
  • Basic System Principles and Components
Trainings will occur at Georgia Piedmont Technical College in Clarkston and is scheduled to begin the week of June 10th and will conclude by August 2nd and August 23rd for the machine operator and industrial maintenance pathways, respectively.
 
Upon graduation from their prospective pathways, trainees will interview with participating companies for the opportunity to join their workforce.
 
Requirements 
  • Current high school senior
  • Must be 18 years old by August 2024
  • Available for weekday classes 2 evenings out of the week beginning June 10th until August 23rd  
  • Reliable transportation to and from the training site
  • Applications must be in by May 6th  
  • There is no GPA requirement
Scholarships/Sponsorships
 
Participants of the pre-apprenticeship attend the training at no cost. Scholarships for tuition are paid for by local manufacturers that have decided to sponsor students throughout the program.
